

Black Belt Study Questions
During the black belt test, candidates will be asked ten questions from the following set. Students preparing for the exam are encouraged to prepare their responses in advance and discuss them with the senior instructor. Students of all ranks are encouraged to begin learning early and continue to expand their knowledge of taekwon-do.

What is the definition or English translation of Taekwon-do?

Taekwon-do can be translated, the way of foot and fist, or the art of kicking and punching.

Tae means foot or kicking, kwon means hand or punching, and do means art or way.

A hyung or form is a pattern of movements or techniques against multiple invisible attackers that begins and ends at the same point.

Define and describe a K'ihap?

K'ihap translates roughly to shout or yell. It is a loud expression of force that begins in the diaphragm, tensing the abdominal muscles to increase power to in a technique and protect the abdomen.

How many forms are there in ITF taekwon-do and why?

There are 24 forms in ITF taekwon-do, one for each hour of the day representing Taekwon-do as meant to fill one's life.
